Country Bills
GRANNY PANTIES “I could see spending my entire 401k in this place,” my at-least-40-years-shy-of-retirement roommate remarked as we settled into one of the puffy red booths at Country Bill’s (4415 SE Woodstock Blvd., [503-]774-4189). It’s probably more than the cozy, Grandma’s-house feel that inspired her comment: The crowd—as usual—was primarily the senior-citizen set (including our fantastic server, who was pushing about 70 years in age and 5 feet in height). On a recent visit, the lounge’s dark wood walls and general windowlessness were decked out in their holiday best, complete with animatronic statues of the happy Claus couple. Aside from an entertaining atmosphere, Country Bill’s boasts an extensive menu of specialty cocktails, and the lemon meringue tastes remarkably like the real deal. Of course, if I’m in the right mood next time, I’m definitely going for the sloe gin- and Kahlua-based Panty Dropper.
